Hello and welcome to our guide on the best air conditioning units to buy in the UK for summer 2022. We’ve had a bit of an odd year or so to say the least but one thing that has stayed more consistent over recent years is our every growing need for air con units in the UK.
We’re not Florida where it’s 30 degrees all year round but from April – September we are getting a warmer climate with hotter days and the average temperature being in the high teens with it being around 20 degrees in some parts of the country during these months.

Do I really need air conditioning in the UK?
Believe it or not the United Kingdom can actually get hot and stay hot, the difference with heat in Britain compared to the rest of Europe is ours tends to be more humid and lot stickier.
Take a look below at average weather data for London Heathrow airport. This is 30 years of data from 1981-2010 as you can see from April to October the average temperature is at least 15 degrees and goes above that in the peak summer months such as July and August, although this is only averages and not the highs, it might seem like a distant memory now but back in 2018 most parts of the UK had 50 days of consecutive sunshine, where the temperature was often above 20 degrees and was also the joint hottest summer on record.
Are Air Con units expensive?
AC units can range from anywhere from £200 to well into the Thousands, as with anything you get what you pay for, whilst you probably won’t be picking one up from the middle aisle at Aldi you can still purchase one at a reasonable price, the benefit is they tend to last a long time too.
How much does Air Con cost to run UK?
This is a very common question when it comes to air conditioning and just how expensive are they to run, we Brits love a good bargain but we’re also happy to pay a reasonable price for comfort, particularly in those warmer months of the year when it can get horrible and sticky at night.
The cost of running portable AC units at home varies depending on what unit you purchase and what you pay for your energy but we’ve found they aren’t too expensive to run and of course aren’t used year round.
BTU ratings on air conditioning machines is a good place to start when querying how much they cost, a typical 10,000 BTU machine will cost around 10 pence per hour to run, meaning if you ran it for the warmest twelve hours of the day you’d be paying £1.20 for the comfort of air con that day. Should we see a month long heatwave then you’d simply multiply that figure by 30 meaning you’d be paying an extra £36 that month on your electricity bill.
Bear in mind you probably wouldn’t be using AC all day, all week, month or year so please take running costs with a pinch of salt.

The Black & Decker BXAC40008GB is a fine air con unit built to last and built from a reputable brand known for it’s expertise. Whether you’d like a gentle breeze to keep you cool, or an icy cool airflow similar to antarctica then you’re in luck as this unit has three different settings which is handy and can easily be adjusted. This portable air con unit from Daewoo is the version up from the machine above on the list, slightly more expensive but also very efficient at cooling the room down! it comes with three settings, a self evaporate function as well as an auto swing function also. It’s ideal for those looking to cool a room down very quickly and efficiently. – the only downside is it can be a bit noisy so not always perfect for the bedroom overnight.
