We’ve seen interest in the console increase tenfold in recent months, based on recent statistics from google the word “PS 5” is being searched roughly 3.5m times per month meaning about one in every ten households in the UK are after a PlayStation 5 at the moment.

Word on the grapevine is that retailers are in the process of receiving stock as we speak so shortages should be relieved for at least a few weeks in the near future.

Retailers stocking or allowing PS5 pre orders are quite a rarity at the moment due to many things but mostly Covid-19 and Brexit. The Playstation 5 controller, or as most people know it the Dual Sense is the successor to the Dual Shock controller, the Dual shock had been around for years and was time for a bit of modernisation. The Dual Sense controller from Sony is a real game changer for anyone into their consoles and here we’ll tell you why:

So the Dual Sense controller is clearly going to look a bit different from the Dual Sense but of course has many of its key features as you’d imagine.

It mixes white and black rather than the standard and classic jet black controller design that’s been around since the launch of the Playstation 2 in 2000. The input layouts are basically the same too.

The light bar on the back of the Dual Shock 4 is now split between the sides of the central touchpad, and there’s a new Create button in place of the Share button, but most everything else is standard for a PlayStation controller.

The biggest changes and advancements are found on the inside of the DualSense. The high points are:

  • Haptic feedback: the DualSense delivers “a variety of powerful sensations that you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud.” The Dual Shock 4 had rumble functionality, but the Dual Sense goes much further with more subtle and varied types of feedback.

  • Adaptive triggers: the L2 and R2 buttons on the Dual Sense can match tension of in-game actions. Drawing the string on a bow was the example Sony gave, but based on previous accounts, the same can be said of firing a heavy machine gun and the like. Sony also says that the angle of the triggers, relative to the whole controller, has been tweaked slightly

  • Create button: the Share button has been replaced, but the new Create button serves a similar purpose. Sony says that this button will create “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves.”
  • Built-in microphone: you read that right – the Dual Sense has a microphone built right into it, which makes hopping into a chat with friends quick and seamless.

So When Can You Actually Buy a PS5?

As you know the console is out of stock for pretty much every retailer at the moment, although some retailers have been holding onto the little stock they do have. Although we have seen more chances to buy a PS5 or to sign up to a waiting list with many retailers promising a lot more stock by the summer.

Should I Buy a PS5 Today?

It depends, if you’ve got it in your hands and the cash in your pocket then I’d say go for it! You don’t know how long the stock will last for and you also don’t know when it will be replenished so if you ha e one in hand it will be hard to say no.

If not or you’re being asked to pre order or sign up to a waiting list then I’d advise double checking with yourself whether you need one right now and if you can afford to part with the best part of £500 at this moment too.

How Much Is The PS5?

In the UK it has an RRP of £449  for the console on its own, many retailers will be limping bundles together and throwing in games and accessories, but of course at a higher price.

£449 seems to be the going rate at the moment as it’s the same price as the  Xbox Series X.

The PS5 Digital Edition is priced at £359 which makes it much more affordable and it actually has pretty much the same specifications so if you’re after value for money then try and aim for the  digital edition.

Since we mentioned the Microsoft console earlier I thought we may as well reference their alternative console too, the Xbox Series S is priced lower, but we’re not here to talk about Xbox’s anyway!.

PS5 vs PS5 Digital - What's Better?

There’s only a few small differences between these two consoles, hence why they’re priced only around £80 apart.

The standard Playstation 5 has a disc drive which allows you to play either online games or via disc like the good old days. A real win here is that you can play PS4 games too whether they’re from a disc or online.

The digital version allows you only to play games online as it doesn’t have a disc drive, however you can still play downloaded PS4 games on it too. It also has the same specs as the full PS5.

What you need to consider is how many PS4 games and physical discs you’ll be playing  and how many you can see yourself purchasing going forward too.

PS5 Backwards Compatibility

If you’re someone that will still want to play your favourite PS4 games on your new Playstation console then there’s some good news! you can!

It has been announced that around 99% of PS4 games will be playable on the PS5. Which is great news. Too many times we’ve seen companies bring out a beer product then make their old stuff incompatible, thankfully not the new masterpiece from Sony.

Just so you’re aware Select PS4 games will see an increased loading speed on the new console. Leveraging Game Boost.
